One of downtown Toronto’s most beloved and famous historical buildings has a long and interesting history as it changed owners numerous times over the years. Many are familiar with 299 Queen Street West and recognize it as the former CHUM-City Building and MuchMusic headquarters but its history also includes many years of religious ownership. A combination of Gothic and Romanesque styles, the Methodist Church commissioned architect Edward Burke to design the building in 1913. In 1984, the building was purchased by the radio station CHUM, which restored the aging structure. For many years, it was home to MuchMusic and was the site of its many popular shows like The New Music, the long-running dance show Electric Circus, and the MuchMusic Video Awards. Today popular shows, including etalk, The Marilyn Denis Show, and The Social are produced at the building. So if you’re lucky you might catch a glimpse of one of your favourite Canadian stars.
